The Maryland Institute of Technology for the Humanities is doing some wonderful things in the futuristic marriage between technology and the humanities. Bringing relevance and application to humanities through advances in digital archiving and as a means of producing creative expression by mating humanities works, past and present, to computer coded algorithms. Making those studies and conversations available outside the academic community is a goal of MITH. Take a bite out of this apple: a taste of some of Emily Dickinson's poetry provided by the women's studies section of the reading room: http://mith.umd.edu//WomensStudies/ReadingRoom/Poetry/Dickinson/

Anytime made up words become new words, recognized and accepted by large numbers of people, those are wordsthatkick. And NYC and China qualify as large numbers of people places. On Feb. 4th, an unknown, undrafted, twice cut, and widely unwanted, 23 year old Asian American basketball player who saw limited playing time came in to spark the Knicks with a 25 point performance in his fist start, and subsequently led his team to 8 wins and scored 200 points in 9 games. That's linsane. The linsanity of an improbable underdog turning superhero story has become a linfectious feel good news story spreading outside of the sports world.
The New York Post, and others, printed headlines of Just Lin Baby, Linning Streak, The Might Lin, Lin Lin Lin, and have sparked a wave of play on word Lin-guistics. He linvigorated this team, He's All- Linn, his game winning shot was Thril-lin, he's Jeremy Win, he's Linderella, are examples that have been spotted in print. Just think of the possibilities: the Knicks could be linvincible, lindefensible, if they play with this lintensity, let's all get in touch with our lindustrious nature, our Inner Lin, if he gets hurt it would be a linjury, if he gets accused of something he would be presumed linnocent, he's linfallible even though he has a high turnover number, most people are rooting for Lin and the lincomprehensible 'kid acquires super powers through linitiative and hard work' (and an awesome pick and roll) story. Add the Ivy League education and Silicon Valley upbringing, and the Asian communities who are getting positive press and recognition and you get a crossover dribbling international pop star. Move over Jay-Z and J. Lo. It's been a fun two weeks as social media, and mainstream media have embraced a not so serious take on their misuse of the Linglish language. A drop off of hype is linevitable, just ask Lady Gaga about that fame monster. Hey J, just keep swishin' and dishin', and of course, lin-nin', because thats what you love to do. and the poetry?, Tan Lin who else? http://www.brooklynrail.org/2007/05/poetry/tan-lin http://www.poetryfoundation.org/harriet/2010/07/tan-lins-coffee-table-book-for-librarians/ http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/21706 Valentine's Day has to be the day where the most poetry is exchanged. Rhyme is mainstream today. Millions of people will read metaphor today. Where else does poetry live if not in romance. What else is poetry than an expression of love. When most people think of verse, they think of romantic poetry, love songs. The lyrics of most songs are about love. With today's technology of texting, tweeting, e-mailing, facebooking, and the web, how many people and how many ways will someone say; "My heart beats for you." It may come from American Greeting or Hallmark, and it may be sappy, or corny, but hey, a Rumi only comes around every couple hundred years, and it is the thought that counts, right. This is where the chocolate comes in, someone wrote actions speak louder than words. Now that you have expressed your feelings, of course, you have to walk the talk. You can't say; "I love you more than all the stars in all the galaxies", and then turn the basketball game on or start talking about the budget. Or maybe you can, just not today. Poetry like most art is the pudding, prose is the meat and potatoes. You may not be able to live on poetry, but you may not want to live without desert. So let me count the ways...
